History of Baseball Bats

October 20th, 2010

At early time of introducing of Baseball Bats, they were available in different shapes and sizes and were made of wood. In the middle of 1800, baseball was a comparatively young sport and baseball batters used to make their own bats and experimented with different option. The bats were different lengths, shapes and weights. During this time, players used bats made from various kinds of wood in order to make better their hitting capability. They soon understood that Wagon Tongue wood was the best wood for making bats. Players also realized that a round bat was better to hit a ball much more solidly. This realization came true when the round bat became very popular within the next four or five years and all baseball players were using this round bat.

In 1859, the baseball player’s association put a new regulation on bat size to stop the usage of the varied sizes and shapes of baseball bats. This new rule on bat size stated bats could no longer be larger than 2.5 inches in diameter, though they could be of any length. But in 1869, another rule was imposed that stated the bat could be no longer than 42 inch in length. This rule is still present in the game today.

While these imposing rules of bats were started, the many wood makers were trying to produce the bats that got popularity in the market. In 1989, it was said that long and slender is the most common style of bats with a handle which had a carved knob for better control. Times made change in the baseball bat materials. Today the northern white ash is used to make the majority of wood bats because of its hardness, durability, strength, weight and feel. Now-a-days, scientists are using drying wood to manufacture bats with reduced moisture content. This process of manufacturing of bat makes the bat effective by reducing its weight. As a result, maple bats have got huge popularity today which was too heavy previously. Maple bats is expensive than white ash, but they often last longer due to its high strength.

Today, several companies have produced bamboo baseball bats. Bamboo bats are made through several steps. At first, bamboo strips are pressed to turn into billets and then these billets are processed to turn into bats. Bamboo is an extremely strong wood. In 1970, the beginning of aluminum of bats made a great change in the baseball game at every level except professional leagues. Aluminum bats are lighter and stronger. It is much better than using wooden bats. Today, stronger alloys are used in aluminum bats to make it both stronger and lighter. Lined aluminum bats such as graphite and titanium have become popular now-a-days as a result of their strength and low weight. In recent years, carbon fiber bats, double wall bats and cryogenic manufacturing processed bats are produced by companies. The history of baseball bats is highly significant and interesting. There are a lot of changes in bats and other tools of game over 150 years have made baseball one of the very favorite games in the world.

Composite Baseball Bats Banned

September 15th, 2010

The national high school association that oversees equipment regulation took measures this summer and passed an ordinance officially outlawing composite baseball bats.   Composite baseball bats are Easton bat companies best sellers.  Along with other bat manufacturers, easton, demarini, worth, louisville and nike all make composite bats.  They are the best sellers even at a 400 dollar price tag.  What is this going to mean for the bat industry?  First lets address why they were banned.

Composite baseball bats are made with metal fiber weaves much like carbon fiber.   This creates great strength with light weight, effectively allowing the walls of the bat to be thinner and the bat weight to be redistributed to the end cap.  However, these bats also get broken in, in way different than aluminum.  The fibers begin to stretch and become more elastic after hitting the bat regularly.  This creates a spring action effect that causes the bat to not only increase its performance over time, but come off the bat at a rate that exceeds current regulation.  After much research the NFHS saw that the composite baseball bats were in fact significantly increasing the speed in which the baseball came off the bat and subsequently decreasing the reaction time of the fielders.  There have been a few injuries in recent years due to the increase in performance and the NFHS is trying to look out for the safety of kids playing.  Due to the appeal they stated that once composite bats can be made that keep the  Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard then they will be instituted.   As for now the largest bat manufacturer will have to come up with new bat models before next high school baseball season.  Easton baseball bats stands to make a lot of money this spring if everyone has to buy new bats, but will they be able to put the same price tag on aluminum bats?  What are the impacts on youth baseball bats.  Will composite bats soon be banned in little league?

All this remains to be seen, but the NFHS just appears to be looking out for the best interest of high school athletes in their ban against composite baseball bats.  Easton baseball bats and other companies will have to adapt to their rules and do it quickly.

Baseball Batting Drills for Kids

September 2nd, 2010

Most people’s passion for baseball begin at a very young age.  Often kids will start as young as 5 and continue with them well on into adulthood.  As a society we understand that kids have a lot of development potential and learning ability at young ages.  This is why we focus on teaching them so much in school.  Likewise, we need to realize that baseball skills and swing mechanics, like anything  is something that can and should be learned at a young age.  Often we gloss over batting mechanics because we don’t give the kids the credit they deserve in their ability to learn.  Learning how to swing a baseball bat properly at a young age can have benefits for decades to come. It is important to set a good foundation or else can be difficult trying to correct a swing later in life.  Here are some batting drills to help your kids learn the proper mechanics of hitting a baseball.

1) Seeing the ball early out of the pitchers hand and watching it until it hits the baseball bat is definitely one of the most valuable skills that sets great hitters apart from good hitters.  It like anything else takes practice and repetition and is easier to develop through time, especially when a ball is being thrown 30 mph vs 90mph.    A drill to help improve this skill is called the Good Eye Drill.   What you need for the drill is some baseballs, baseball bats, colored sharpies and a field to hit.  Take each baseball and mark a few dots on it, a different color for each ball.  Then take batting practice and ask the player after each hit what color he saw.   This will help him focus on watching the ball hit the bat.

2) Using a batting tee is one of the most underrated drills.  Anyone from the smallest child to a professional baseball player can do the drill and benefit from it.  Using a batting tee takes all the moving variables out of hitting and allows to focus on your swing.  You can get a better gauge on your swing path because that is the only thing you have to consciously think about.  It will allow your kids to make adjustments and then continue to make proper swings, using repetition and muscle memory to help hone their hitting abilities.   For the younger kids it is easy to teach proper stance and swing.  Best of all it takes up very little space, you can hit into a pop up net in the backyard.

3) Soft toss is another valuable drill.  This consists primarily of tossing the ball to a batter from the side, while the batter strikes the ball with a baseball bat into the net in front of him.  This is similar to a batting tee drill in that it isolates many variables but it allows you to make adjustments to balls thrown slightly differently as well it can help with your swing load, step and tempo.  There are many variations to this drill, most notable being high low, when the tossers feeds two balls at the same time, one high one low and calls out which one for the batter to hit.  This requires focus, timing and hand eye coordination.

Now that you have some drills take your kids out, dust off the baseball bats and help them develop a skill that will last a lifetime.

Baseball Hitting Aids

August 24th, 2010

An abundance of baseball hitting aids exist today, the market is practically flooded with them.   New ones pop up weekly that make major claims about revolutionizing the way you swing.  Are they telling the truth?  Well sure some of them will actually improve your swing slightly.  But most of them won’t help you swing the baseball bat any better.  They will often screw up your approach at the plate. We created this guide to help you weed through all the baseball hitting gadgets and gizmos before you buy.  Hopefully we will save you some time and money, while increasing that batting average.

Remember when you choose a baseball training aid you need to determine whether it is teaching you a skill, or principle that can actually be transversed to an actual baseball game situation.  This goes for any training aid not just baseball hitting, but pitching and fielding as well.  The idea is to be doing specific exercises and movements that will be actually used when you are in the batters box with the baseball bat in hand.

Also make sure the baseball batting aid is specific to a certain aspect of your hitting approach, whether that be your swing, stance, angle of attack, bat speed, etc.  As long as it is an applicable principal that can be used during the hitting process rather than some tricky gimmick then you are on the right track.  Knowing that you are working on a direct part of your game also breeds confidence when you are in a real baseball game situation.

Likewise you want to avoid the hitting aids that appear to be trendy, for example the oddly weighted or oddly shaped baseball bats that are sold.  In fact, weight baseball bats will only throw off your timing and teach you bad mechanics.  Strength is important in baseball but it should be a separate exercise, not gained through your swinging of a weighted bat.  Off the wall machines and crazy systems are invented everyday, often times they make outrages claims of overnight success.  Remember, baseball is hard work and there is no such thing as an overnight success.  So trust your gut, if you see something that is weird or a fad and seems to good to be true, it generally is.

Remember with any training system to properly analyze how it is going to change your swing and take it slowly to see the results.  Some programs can do more damage than good to your baseball bat swing.  All the fundamentals you learned over the years could be compromised with these devices or programs.  Your swing is built on muscle memory so ensure that you are teaching your muscles the right baseball swing.

It can be easy to get wrapped up in a bunch of different methods, but try and find a few products, programs or drills that really seem to work for you.  You do not need to know 100 drills to hit a baseball correctly as long as you can properly implement  a few then you will be able to improve your batting average.

Keys to Hitting in Baseball

August 20th, 2010

1) Bat speed – Everyone always wants to talk about mechanics and power lifting, but what it comes down to is how fast you can swing that baseball bat through the strike zone. This can be partially developed in the weight room, but there is no substitute for quick wrists. Hank Aaron was not a large man however he was the home run king. It secret was simple, quick hands through the strike zone. This can only be fully learned with practice of swinging an actual baseball bat. Remember to delay the wrists like a golfer does and explode through the baseball while it is in the strike zone. Improve your batting strength by using weighted baseball bats off the tee and even in batting practice. Then when the game comes make sure to choose a baseball bat that is properly suited for you.

2) Know the situation – If you knew what pitch was coming every time how hard would it be to hit it. Well realistically you can know a vast majority of the time by simply analyzing the situation. The greater your baseball IQ the greater your batting average will be. Know the game, know the situations. Understand that every game you watch on television you can learn from and certainly every game you play in you can learn from. If you are in a 3-1 count with runners on, the chances of you getting a fastball are pretty good. If you are waiting on it then you can drive it.

3) Confidence – I know you have heard it before but the mental game is the difference between players with talent who make it and players with talent who don’t. Confidence comes from knowing that you have adequately prepared yourself before the game. If you followed the previous two steps and work on your physical game (bat speed) and your mental preparation (learning the game) then you will undoubtedly step into the batters box with more confidence. With the proper preparation, when you step up to the plate you will know that you are worthy of a hit. Visualization is a strong part of the confidence factor in hitting. While you are in the batters box visualize what you are going to do, feel the baseball bat hitting the ball and believe it. It is a very important process that most professional athletes do before a performance.

Remember excellence is a habit and must be practiced daily and if you want your batting average to rise you must incorporate the three keys into your everyday routine.

How to Choose a Baseball Bat

August 18th, 2010

Are you considering buying a baseball bat?  Although its not a life changing decision it is one that should not be taken lightly.   The baseball bat you choose can have a large impact on your on field performance.  Whether you are a college athlete or a little league up and comer, know that the baseball equipment you choose does make a difference.  First, of all there are significant differences in the cheap bats you buy at retail stores such as Walmart and the high end bats that are available through baseball equipment stores.  The technology between bats in the low end price range and the high end are significantly different.  Not only will you already be one step behind in terms of physics, but not having the right baseball bat could put you at a huge disadvantage in the most important part of the game, the mental aspect.  Feeling comfortable, confident and relaxed at the plate is one of the most important factors that can help you achieve a higher batting average.  You might put up a mental block if you know your bat is subpar or does not feel right in your hands.  We certainly do not want to step up to the plate already defeated.   My advice is to purchase a bat from a reputable retailer that is on the higher end of the spectrum.  Most players that are serious about competition will already have on of these bats and you will need to even the playing field so that your talent can shine.  Once you have resolved to buy a name brand like an easton baseball bat.  Then the next step is deciding what size.

Bat speed is one of the biggest components in hitting the ball far, however it is equally neglected to mention the laws of physics also include principles such as mass to determine velocity.  My best advice to you is to pick up a bat and feel how comfortable it is.  Swing them as hard as you possibly can.  Then choose the heaviest baseball bat that you feel comfortable with.  Remember to make sure you are swinging it and its not swinging you.   So if you feel off balance when swinging it, then step down a size.  Baseball bats can do a lot to improve your game, but practice and persistence is what you need to go to the next level.
